Morphology and Standard of the Lagotto

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an Italian medium-sized breed, morphologically classified in FCI Group 8 – Retrievers, Flushing Dogs, Water Dogs, Section 3: Water Dogs. The uniqueness of its physical structure is closely linked to its function as a truffle dog, for which selection has favored traits such as endurance, agility, and precision in the field.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a medium-built dog, harmonious, sturdy, and compact. Its expression is lively and attentive, with an intelligent gaze. The overall appearance conveys balance and functionality: there are no extremes either in structure or movement.

Head

The head is solid but proportionate to the body. The skull is broad, slightly convex, with well-developed zygomatic arches. The stop is marked but not excessive.

Nose: large, with wide and well-open nostrils, usually pigmented in accordance with coat color.
Eyes: large, round, and well-spaced, with a sweet and intelligent expression. Color ranges from ochre to dark hazel.
Ears: triangular in shape with rounded tips, set high and hanging, covered with curly hair.

Body

The body is compact and muscular, slightly longer than tall (ratio approximately 1:1.10), with a straight topline and a well-developed chest reaching the elbows. The croup is slightly sloping, while the abdomen is moderately tucked up. The tail is set at medium height, carried in a scimitar shape in movement, never curled over the back.

Limbs

The limbs are straight, strong, and well angulated. Musculature is well developed but not excessive.

Feet: round, compact, with arched toes and thick pads.
Movement is free, regular, and lively, with good hind propulsion.

Coat

One of the most distinctive features of the Lagotto Romagnolo is its curly, woolly, and dense coat, which protects it from the elements and allows it to work in all types of environments.

Hair structure: curly all over the body, dense and woolly in texture, with tight and regular curls.
Color: off-white (with or without brown or orange patches), brown roan, brown in various shades, orange, with or without mask. Black is not allowed.

Regular grooming is essential to maintain the correct coat texture. The coat does not shed seasonally but tends to grow continuously; therefore, specific maintenance by the owner or an experienced groomer is required.
