Lagotto truffle dog

The Lagotto Romagnolo is the only dog breed in the world specifically and exclusively selected for truffle hunting. Its physical structure, cooperative temperament, and extraordinary olfactory abilities make it the ideal partner for truffle hunters, capable of handling all types of terrain and environmental conditions with precision and method.

The Lagotto Romagnolo embodies the perfect union of instinct, trainability, and operational intelligence. Its search work is meticulous, its digging is precise, and its collaboration with the handler is natural. Whether used for truffle hunting as a passion or a profession, this dog represents the highest expression of scent work in a natural environment.

A Natural Talent, Shaped Over Time

Descended from the water retrievers of ancient Romagna, the Lagotto saw its role evolve with the disappearance of marshy areas, becoming a true specialist of underground scent detection. Its aptitude for searching is the result of generations of targeted selection aimed at developing:

  • A highly refined sense of smell, capable of detecting even the faintest scent emissions
  • A detailed ability to analyze terrain
  • A thoughtful yet decisive behavior when indicating the presence of truffles

Working Standards: The Lagotto Method

Gait and Movement

The typical gait of the Lagotto is a lively, loose trot, reflecting its natural aptitude for work. Its action dynamically adapts to the terrain: it gallops when changing search areas and moves at a walk during inspection phases. The head carriage varies depending on the stage of the search, but the nose is almost always oriented toward the ground. When it detects a distant scent trail, it may raise its head and follow the emanation guided by the wind.

The tail, always active and never curled over the back, plays an important communicative role: it signals enthusiasm and focus during the search and moves decisively when the dog is close to locating a truffle “forata”.

Truffle Search

The Lagotto’s search is orderly, tireless, and meticulous. It moves along diagonal lines, frequently changing direction to thoroughly inspect the area. It is able to adjust the width of its search radius according to the type of terrain, always maintaining a perfect balance between speed, accuracy, and depth of analysis.

When it detects a faint scent, it slows down, lowers its head, and gradually brings its nose closer to the ground. If it confirms the presence of a truffle, it begins to dig decisively. In case of doubt, it interrupts the action and resumes searching, demonstrating intelligence and discernment.

The Lagotto maintains constant contact with the handler: although it shows initiative, it is always ready to follow commands, return, or change direction. It is minimally distracted and shows no interest in wildlife, except in the case of accidental encounters, from which it quickly returns to the search upon a simple recall.

Forata (Truffle Spot)

Once the truffle spot (“forata”) is located, the Lagotto performs a determined and targeted digging action. It may pause to check, sniffing the walls and bottom to refine the localization, or slightly reposition itself if it believes the truffle has already been extracted. The dog must allow the handler to intervene in the recovery, and if recalled, it immediately resumes digging with precision.

Scent, Cooperation and Working Intelligence

Working with a Lagotto means relying on:

  • An exceptional olfactory memory
  • An autonomous yet synchronized search style
  • Operational consistency even in complex environments

Its working approach is not mechanical but intelligent and adaptive. It can read the terrain, interpret scent signals, and take effective initiatives. Its docility makes it easy to train, and its strong bond with the handler enhances its field performance.

With its compact structure, curly protective coat, and natural physical endurance, the Lagotto Romagnolo is capable of working in all seasons and in any type of terrain: forests, cultivated fields, wetlands, and hilly environments. It is unfazed by cold or long working days and approaches its task with tireless enthusiasm.
