The Lagotto Romagnolo is a medium-sized Italian breed, morphologically classified in FCI Group 8 – Retrievers, Flushing Dogs, Water Dogs, Section 3: Water Dogs. Its unique physical structure is closely linked to its function as a truffle dog, so selection emphasized qualities such as endurance, agility, and precision on the ground.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a medium-sized dog, harmonious, robust, and compact. Its expression is lively and alert, with an intelligent gaze. Its overall appearance conveys balance and functionality: there is no excess in either structure or movement.

Head

The head is massive but in proportion to the body. The skull is broad, slightly convex, and has well-developed zygomatic arches. The stop is pronounced but not exaggerated.

Nose: Large, with wide, well-open nostrils, usually pigmented to match the coat color.

Eyes: Large, round, and set well apart, with a sweet, intelligent expression. Color ranges from ochre to dark hazel.

Ears: Triangular in shape with rounded tips, set high and drooping, covered with curly hair.

Body

The trunk is compact and muscular, slightly longer than it is high (ratio approximately 1:1.10), with a straight topline and a well-developed chest reaching to the elbow. The croup is slightly sloping, while the belly is moderately tucked up. The tail is set moderately high, carried scimitar-like in motion, never curled over the back.

Limbs

The limbs are straight, strong, and well-angulated. The muscles are well-developed but not excessive.

Feet: Round, compact, with arched toes and thick pads.
The gait is free, regular, and lively, with good hindquarters.

Coat

One of the Lagotto Romagnolo's most distinctive characteristics is its curly, woolly, and dense coat, which protects it from the elements and allows it to work in any environment.

Hair Texture: Curly all over, dense and woolly in texture, with tight, regular curls.

Color: Off-white (with or without brown or orange markings), brown roan, various shades of brown, orange, with or without a mask. Black is not permitted.

Regular grooming is essential to maintain proper hair texture. The coat does not shed seasonally, but tends to grow continuously: for this reason, specific care by the owner or an experienced groomer is required.
