Lagotto Puppy: What to Expect

Lagotto Romagnolo puppies appear as small bundles of fur with their famous curly, woolly, and water-resistant coat—a distinctive trait already evident at around 3–4 weeks of age. Their eyes are large, brown or hazel, expressive and alert, while their pendulous, curly ears add a sweetness to their expression. Their typical puppy size at the withers is well-proportioned; weight varies according to sex, but is in line with adult size (males 43–48 cm, 13–16 kg; females 41–46 cm, 11–14 kg). Their square build, with a broad chest and straight back, suggests a robust and harmonious physique.

The growth stages of Lagotto puppies:

  • Vegetative stage (0–15 days):

Puppies are completely dependent on their mother, interacting primarily through touch.

  • Transitional Phase (15-21 days):

Their sight and hearing begin to develop, and the puppies appreciate human contact.

  • Imprinting Phase (21-50 days):

The mother begins to train, and the puppies become more confident in their movements.

  • Socialization Phase (50 days - 4 months):

Puppies need to be exposed to a variety of situations and stimuli to acclimate to life with people, animals, and other dogs.

The Lagotto Romagnolo may initially have a shy and reserved nature, but proper socialization and a human environment can help them overcome these insecurities.

Temperament and Socialization

Even as puppies, Lagottos display a lively, curious, and affectionate personality, perfect for families and children.
They are intelligent, eager to please, and respond well to positive training.
A quality Lagotti Romagnoli breeder initiates early socialization and mental stimulation: this helps the puppy grow into a balanced adult, neither shy nor aggressive toward strangers.

Puppy Health and Care

This is a robust breed with an average lifespan of 14–17 years.
However, responsible breeding includes genetic screening—such as for hip dysplasia, juvenile epilepsy, and cerebellar abiotrophy—to ensure healthy puppies.
Grooming is essential: 1–2 haircuts per year and regular brushing prevent knots and maintain healthy skin.

Activity and Training

The Lagotto is a "type A" dog: energetic and a lover of learning, so puppies require consistent stimulation from the first few months.
Cognitive games, short training sessions, walks, and, whenever possible, "searching" in the garden help respect its strong working instincts.
Furthermore, it has a natural instinct to dig and retrieve: the ideal is to create a safe corner where it can express these qualities without causing damage.

Why choose our Lagotto Romagnolo puppies?

Certified selection: lineage traced and comprehensive genetic testing on both parents (dysplasia, neurological conditions, and eye disorders).

Early training with the Biosensor method: We apply the Senso Puppy program (Biosensor Program), a protocol developed to stimulate puppies early in their first days of life through neurological micro-exercises. This method improves their stress response, strengthens their immune system, increases tolerance to external stimuli, and promotes the development of a more confident and balanced dog.

Targeted socialization: From the first weeks, puppies are gradually exposed to different environmental stimuli, sounds, surfaces, and people to prepare them for the real world.

Post-adoption support: We support each family with personalized advice on feeding, grooming, training, and puppy management.
